In this 4-week class, students will learn how to carve their own block, and print on fabric. The class will begin by introducing students to block printing. We will spend one class exploring the museum, looking for inspiration in the exhibitions and designing the blocks we want to carve. Then students will carve their own block(s) and use them to print on fabrics and other textile goods.
Students do not need any prior technical knowledge, but they should feel comfortable with drawing, because they will need to draw out their block designs before carving them. Students will spend class time learning about the basics of block printing. We will seek our inspirations from visiting the museum galleries before designing the final blocks. Fabrics will be provided, but if students want to print on something specific, they need to provide that themselves. Strawberry Print Fabric

Sasha de Koninck is an artist and PhD candidate in the Intermedia, Art, Writing, and Performance program at the University of Colorado Boulder. Her work is a presentation of a multisensory experience, through the research and development of smart textile material for the body that is intimate, sensitive, and loud. Clothing reveals the details and subtleties of our personalities and life that can't always be explained in words. As material, the textile in a garment is something that is the closest thing to our skin, our shield, and security.
