Tesla has been sporting some creative wraps on its Cybertruck. In July, we speculated that perhaps Tesla was considering getting into the wrap business. Now we have our answer. Tesla has launched premium color wraps for the Model 3 and Model Y. Although Tesla may not stop there.
Before we get the Cybertruck angle, the wrap itself is a story. It is available exclusively through Tesla. These wraps allow for a splash of personal style and offer protection. The self-healing, urethane-based film (PPF) shields the vehicle's original paint from potential damage like chips, scratches, and even the dreaded paint swirl. Paint Protection Film Plotter

Customers can choose from a range of seven vibrant and exclusive colors. Those interested in the subtler spectrum can opt for Satin Stealth Black or Slip Grey, priced at $7,500. However, for those wishing to make a more vivid statement, Glacier Blue, Satin Rose Gold, Forest Green, Satin Ceramic White, and Crimson Red are available at a premium of $8,000. Although these wraps come at a premium, they offer more protection than a standard wrap.
Furthermore, for individuals looking to maintain their original car color while enjoying the protective benefits, the Model 3/Y Clear Wrap option is available for $5,000. Installations are currently being managed at two primary Tesla Service Centers in West Covina and Carlsbad, California. Right now these wraps are also limited to 2023 model years of the 3 and Y.
From a camouflage design to the surprising Ford F-150 mockup, Cybertruck sightings with unique wraps make sense. Given the Cybertruck's single-tone stainless steel design, such customizations would allow owners to differentiate their vehicles on the roads.
In previous statements, Elon Musk hinted at the possibility of Cybertruck owners wrapping their vehicles in "any color or pattern." Could the introduction of the Model 3 and Model Y wrap service, be just the first step? Given the Cybertruck's unique design, which we previously likened to a blank canvas, there's a vast playground for potential customizations.
Tesla's move in the US mirrors its initiatives in China, where the company has a wrapping service to provide their vehicles with a rejuvenated appearance, offsetting their limited paint options.
This strategic move could address the critique regarding the monotony of Tesla's vehicle color schemes. Beyond production efficiencies, introducing wraps could offer Tesla owners a bespoke vehicle experience, showcasing their individual flair. As we anticipate the launch of Cybertruck, incorporating customizable wraps might signal a redefining moment in EV personalization.
Tesla's venture into vehicle wraps for Model 3 and Model Y could be a prelude to a more expansive customization offering, potentially for the eagerly-awaited Cybertruck. As Tesla was born and raised in California, incorporating the wrap business in that state will give the company a good idea of customer demand, even before the Cybertruck.

Plus Power has unveiled the Kapolei Energy Storage (KES) facility in Oahu, Hawaii. This project, powered by Tesla's innovative Megapack 2 XL batteries, marks a critical step in Hawaii's transition from fossil fuels to renewable sources such as solar and wind.
Central to this achievement are 158 Tesla Megapack batteries. These massive units, each akin to a shipping container, cumulatively deliver 185 megawatts of power capacity and 565 megawatt-hours of electricity. This deployment is a testament to Tesla's technological prowess and a significant milestone in energy storage and grid management.
For Tesla enthusiasts, the KES project demonstrates how Tesla's technology is revolutionizing the energy sector, extending beyond electric vehicles to a comprehensive approach to sustainable energy. Tesla's Megapack, also used by Apple, is not just a battery; it's a key component in the global transition to sustainable energy.
Mike Snyder from Tesla highlights the project's uniqueness: it's the first time a standalone battery site has provided grid-forming services at this scale. This underscores Tesla's Megapack inverters' role in transforming energy storage and grid management.
Brandon Keefe, Executive Chairman of Plus Power, emphasizes the project's groundbreaking nature. This initiative represents the first time a major utility has used a battery system to balance a power grid, providing fast frequency response, synthetic inertia, and black start capabilities. This pioneering use of battery systems like Tesla's Megapack is critical for grid stability and renewable integration.
Strategically located near Honolulu, KES is crucial for Hawaii's isolated grid, where managing the fluctuations of renewable energy sources is essential. The facility stands out for its rapid response capability, reacting in just 250 milliseconds, significantly quicker than traditional combustion-powered plants.
One of the key challenges in Hawaii has been managing the surplus solar and wind power to maintain grid balance. KES is expected to reduce the curtailment of renewable energy by 69% over the next five years and enable a 10% increase in new utility-scale renewables.
Besides enhancing grid stability and renewable energy integration, KES is predicted to bring economic benefits. Hawaiian Electric's filing suggests modest reductions in electric bills, reflecting the broader economic advantages of transitioning to renewable energy.
KES is technically impressive, with 135 MW / 540 MWh of capacity and energy, 50 MW / 25 MWh of additional 'fast frequency response,' and features like 'virtual inertia' and 'black start' capabilities. These elements are crucial for smooth power supply and quick recovery in blackout scenarios.
The Kapolei Energy Storage facility, powered by Tesla's Megapack, is a beacon for renewable energy adoption worldwide. It exemplifies how innovative battery storage can revolutionize energy grids, paving the way for a cleaner, more sustainable future.
There is another attempt to create a solar-powered Tesla. DartSolar is pitching a drivable solar array to self-charge your car. Companies are experimenting with this concept, aiming to enhance the sustainability and self-sufficiency of EVs. A solar-powered Tesla would be amazing, no doubt. But it isn’t happening. That is not this writer's opinion, but the guy who may be the biggest fan of both solar and Tesla: Elon Musk.
Taking on the challenge is an ambitious company working on the "drivable solar array," currently in beta, designed to self-charge EVs. The company uses a Tesla Model Y test vehicle with nine large solar panels. The website states that “Beta One is light enough to be carried on the roof rack of your EV. It weighs less than 165 lbs. When expanded, it fits in a standard parking spot.”
Beta One features flexible solar panels without junction boxes, allowing for flat shipping and simple assembly into four sections. Projected to be priced at $4,000 USD and using nine 175-watt panels, Beta One claims to generate 6 kWh daily, providing about 20 miles (32 kilometers) of EV range with five hours of sunlight.
The amount of energy generated and range gained on an EV with these panels will obviously vary depending on the location, weather, and the vehicle, but how long would it take to recoup the initial investment? Without taking into account any range decrease due to the reduced aerodynamics and increased weight, owners would be looking at about $0.97 USD in daily savings (based on 16.21 cents per kWh average in the U.S.) when using these solar panels.
Before you even take into account the look of the vehicle, the added maintenance, and potential issues, owners would be looking at more than 11 years before making back their initial investment of $4,000.
That’s not to say this project doesn’t have its benefits and use cases. If you’re in a remote location with little access to electricity, this could be an interesting idea, however, it’s not going to make sense for most consumers. Solar requires a lot of space and right now it just makes more sense on a large open area instead of being strapped to the top of a moving vehicle. However, projects such as these continue to push innovation and outside-of-the-box thinking.
Teslas are popular vehicles for solar experiments as we’ve seen before with extendable range extenders.
Musk recently posted on X: "Earth already receives about the same energy from the Sun in an hour than humanity consumes in a year. Solar panels just need to catch a tiny amount of it to power our entire civilization!" Despite acknowledging the immense potential of solar energy, Musk remains doubtful about its application in EVs due to limited surface area. In this video clip, he gives a simple explanation for his 2021 appearance with Joe Rogan.
Aptera Motors continues to face the challenge of creating a solar-powered vehicle. The San Diego start-up has been raising funds for a few years to produce its unique, three-wheel sun-powered car. This vehicle can travel up to 1,000 miles on a single charge, up to 40 miles powered solely by solar energy.
Aptera's vehicle is aerodynamically optimized and built with lightweight materials. Its unique shape and solar panel integration set it apart from traditional EVs, showcasing the potential of solar energy in transportation.
The integration of solar energy with EVs represents a frontier in sustainable transportation. While challenges such as surface area limitations exist, innovations like DartSolar’s Beta One and Aptera's solar electric vehicle may pave the way for a sunny and greener future.
