Get tech's top stories in 30 seconds:

Unmute the mic, check the app's sound settings, and install any necessary driver updates

There are a variety of things you can try to fix a mic that's malfunctioning or not recording. Below are all the best solutions that should get your Lenovo microphone up and running again.

Your mic might just be muted, but if not, here are some other possible reasons it isn't working:

Many of these troubleshooting suggestions also apply to headphones that aren't working.

Try these fixes in order, checking after each step to see if your computer's mic is functioning properly:

Unmute your mic. When using your microphone with an app like Zoom, make sure the mute button isn't engaged.

Check the app's sound settings. An app that can use a microphone probably has a section in its settings to control sound, which might include a toggle to enable the mic or an option to pick which mic to use.

Check app permissions for a setting that controls access to your mic.

For example, in Windows 11, Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone has a toggle that determines whether apps can access the mic.

Restart your computer. A simple reboot can clear out temporary bugs that affect all sorts of things, one of which could be making your mic not work.

Review your Windows sound settings. There's a section in the Settings app called Input that needs to have your mic selected in order for it to work. If you've connected other headsets or microphones to your PC in the past, make sure the internal microphone is set as the default.

Run the Windows audio troubleshooter. Windows includes an automatic fix-it tool for everything audio related. Running it might be all you need to do to fix the microphone problem.

Increase the mic volume. It might appear to be broken when the problem is really just too low of an input volume. Search the Settings app for Sound to find these controls.

Update your device drivers. It's possible that one or more drivers responsible for sound have become corrupted or deleted.

Connect an external microphone. While not really a fix, you can try connecting a Bluetooth or USB microphone. This workaround will only work if the problem lies with the internal hardware.

Reset Windows. This will wipe your hard drive and reinstall Windows. Apply this fix only if you've tried all the above and you suspect a major software issue is to blame for your Lenovo mic not working.

Get your Lenovo repaired or replaced. If you believe the internal hardware is damaged and your device is still under warranty, check to see if you qualify for a free repair or replacement.

Check for hardware damage and fix it yourself. If your PC is no longer under warranty, and you feel confident enough to open up your computer, see if the internal microphone wiring is connected to the motherboard. Plug them back in or replace the wires if necessary.

Lenovo's Vantage software is essentially a shortcut menu for system functions like camera settings, power options, and device driver updates.

To pair AirPods to Lenovo laptop, go to the system tray > select the Bluetooth icon > select Add a Bluetooth device > Add Bluetooth or other device. Wait for the laptop to detect the AirPods, then select your AirPods.

Barring potential hardware issues, the most likely reason is that your external mic doesn't have the necessary permissions. Connect the microphone, then go into your Thinkpad's settings and check to see if it has access, and allow it to connect if necessary.
