The treatment facility was the first laser treatment in the South Pacific which included a Nd:YAG laser machine and a CO2 fractional laser machine where Fijians would be able to receive their treatments locally, decreasing the dependency for laser treatments on the overseas health sector.

The facility was made possible through collaboration between the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and Twomey Hospital.

Dr Ji Hyun Yi, a doctor from the Republic of Korea dispatched by KOICA Fiji office, said about 2000 dermatological patients would benefit annually from the treatments.

“The project was carried out to meet the rising demand for laser treatment,” Dr Yi said.

“I hope the centre develops into a specialised dermatological facility in the near future.”

He added skin diseases which were unable to be cured in Fiji, such as burn scars and body dysmorphic disorder could be treated at the facility.

Head of wellness at the Ministry of Health and Medical Services Dr Devina Nand lauded the new treatment facility.

“There are so many advancements not only in the dermatological area, but also in the health sector,” Dr Nand said.

KOICA Fiji office and the Embassy of the Republic of Korea hope to continue to support amazing initiatives such as the laser treatment centre, which assists the Health Ministry, dermatologists in hospitals and the citizens of Fiji and strengthen the Fiji-Korea partnership.
